Dog Trainer Career

1279126810 26 Dog Trainer Career

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a dog trainer? Here you will find the requirements you should fulfill and the time it may take you to make your dream come true.

Before considering a career in dog training, you should consider some important requirements. You must be aware that loving dogs is not enough to be a successful trainer. You must be proficient in dog behavior, learning theories, behavior modification, first aids (both human and canine), marketing and business management.

In addition, you may want to train dogs for competitions, such as Schutzhund, Agility, Mondio Ring, Freestyle, etc. in this case, you should have a strong knowledge of rules and competitive procedures.

To make a long story short, the list below explains you the 17 most important requirements you must fulfill to be a dog trainer:

1. You must be passionate about working with dogs. otherwise you will be very unhappy with your job. taking away exceptional cases, dog training is not a high-salary career. So, you should not expect to compensate frustrations with money. That’s why you really have to be passionate about working with dogs. Of course, this passion can only come if you love dogs. If you don’t love dogs and are not passionate about working with them, just look for another job.

2. You must feel comfortable working with people. Feeling comfortable working with people is as being comfortable working with dogs. That’s because the job of a dog trainer involves teaching people as much as teaching dogs, or even more. If you don’t teach people how to handle their dogs in different situations, then they won’t be able to control their pets. as a consequence, your dog training business is not going to receive any good publicity.

3. You should be respectful and kind with both people. Acting in an arrogant manner toward other trainers, dog owners, animal behaviorists or anyone, can’t help you. Arrogant behavior does not create word of mouth publicity. even worse, people who attended a training class with an arrogant instructor, tend to not go to the same place when they need help again. So, being polite and respectful is part of developing your dog training business.

4. You should be respectful and kind with animals. This point needs no further explanation. nobody wants his dog be mistreated by a harsh trainer.

5. Develop teaching skills. since you are going to teach people how to handle and train their own dogs, you must have some teaching skills. there are lots of good trainers that don’t succeed because they can’t teach people how to train their dogs.

6. be patient. Patience is perhaps the most important skill a dog trainer must master. Dogs can’t be trained in a couple of minutes. So, you need to be patient to allow the dog (and the owner) learn at their own pace.

7. Sense of humor. You are going to find a lot of problems during training sessions. however, many of those problems are so funny that they deserve a dose of humor. having good sense of humor allows you to not get buried under a ‘problematic job’ and helps you to be creative when solving a behavior issue.

8. be honest. You have to tell the dog owner what really happens. not what he wants to hear. there are problems that can’t be solved by training and, if you face one of those problems, you should inform the dog owner. On the other hand, there could be some issues that you can’t handle. be honest with the dog owner. If you can’t address an issue (for instance, aggression) recommend another dog trainer who can.

9. Never underestimate the skills of other dog trainers. It does not matter if they use old techniques that you don’t approve. every dog trainer has his own method and nobody should be underestimated by the way he trains. Of course, you may disagree with other dog trainers, but never underestimate them.

10. Learn about several dog training techniques, even the old ones. Knowing the pros and cons of each technique will let you choose the right ones. This does not mean you should try every technique you’ve heard about. But reading books and watching videos about different techniques may teach something new and improve your training skills.

11. keep up to date on the science of animal behavior and learning theories. Dog training is not a science but it is based on some scientific principles. as a good dog trainer you have to be up to date on animal behavior and learning theories to take advantage of recent discoveries.

12. Read a lot about dog training, but don’t believe all you read. there are lots of myths and hypes in dog trainer. as a dog trainer you should keep some skepticism and critical thinking.

13. Learn about marketing, publicity and business management. If you are a professional dog trainer, then you have to manage your dog training business. otherwise you are not a pro.

14. Learn about dog nutrition, health and care. Put a lot of attention of dog first-aids because you will need them sometime. besides, learn about management of kennels, doggy daycare, etc.

1279083611 15 Why Dog Obedience Training Is So Important

You have just brought home your new little puppy. Dog obedience training is the last thing on your mind. For sure you know that you will need to know how to housetrain your dog but that should be simple enough, after all, he is a very smart dog.

you envision what your life is going to be like now that you have a new best friend. in your mind you see you and your pet running free at the park and playing. there will be no need for a leash because your dog will stay right by your side and you will take him where ever you go.

He might even be a best friend to your daughter or son. They will spend the summers running together and getting into mischief the way a kid and their dog are supposed to. Life is going to be fantastic!

Then the truth comes out.

Your smart and well behaved dog is refusing to use the vast bathroom outside and has discovered that your couch is the perfect bed. you find yourself wondering “How do you keep dogs off furniture“?!He is now too good for the kibbles and bits you try to feed him and instead rummages around the counters to find better fare. Your carpet is a digging zone.

you had no clue what it really meant to be the owner of a teething puppy.Forget the fact that your dog has a zillion chew toys and bones laying around the house, the sides of your recliner are so much better to chew on. He barks all day and night and slowly but surely your hopes and dreams of owning the perfect dog has vanished.

So what do you do now?

Well, getting rid of the horrible dog is not an option because even if you wish it for a second he get the biggest, mournful eyes when he is in trouble. He really loves you and you are quite fond of him.

If only that silly dog would behave (even a little)!

Well the answer my friend is dog training and not just taking your dog to a dog training class a handful of times. Dogs need constant training to get well behaved but it is not as hard to do as you might think.

Dogs are born to please so when you and your dog finally figure out how to communicate to each other and he finally gets what it is that you want him to do he will go out of his way to make you happy.

Dog Separation Anxiety Training

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

1279065615 19 Dog Separation Anxiety Training

Separation anxiety in dogs is a serious issue that not only affects your dog emotionally but physically. Separation anxiety is caused by a variety of factors. some theorists claim that certain breeds of dogs are inherently clingy and become stressed when separated from their human companions. Separation anxiety is also caused when a dog is accustomed to not being alone and then that factor changes. if a dog is in a new environment that, too, can sometimes cause confusion and anxiety. there can be other contributory factors to this emotional turmoil as well, and you need to understand them if you’re going to work with your dog on this issue..

No matter the reason, the behaviors displayed by a dog suffering from separation anxiety range from barking and howling to destroying items in the home and causing harm to themselves in order to “escape”. due to the severity of this issue, dog separation anxiety training is a necessary tool to help your dog cope. for mild to moderate cases of separation anxiety that already exists, or to prevent separation anxiety before signs of it appear, the following training tips can be applied. for more severe cases, it is best to contact a veterinarian who may be able to prescribe medication.

When you leave or return home, do not encourage your dog’s excitement. if the dog approaches you whining, jumping, barking, etc., ignore him for awhile. when your dog is calm, it is okay to give him attention; in this way, you’re rewarding him for his calmness. when you know you’re going to leave, have a good long play or exercise session with your dog. He’ll be too tired afterwards to want to make a fuss.

Leave your dog with his favorite toys when you are out. a variety of chew toys will not only keep him occupied, but they will help to keep him from chewing your belongings as well. Toys such as a kong, that can be filled with peanut butter or other treats, are especially nice; your dog will begin to look forward to your absence, because it means he gets something extra special.

Don’t give your dog too much attention when you are at home. Even though dogs are cute, especially puppies, and you want to spend an immense amount of time playing with them, you should practice using crates, gates, etc., to keep them alone for parts of the day. Leave them with toys and treats to get used to the idea of being alone. not practicing this could worsen the feelings of boredom and anxiety when you do leave your dog by himself.

The most important thing is to be committed to the dog separation anxiety training. Remember that dogs are pack animals that are used to socializing. when you’re not there, expect that they are going to miss you being around. That’s why you should keep them occupied when you’re away with enjoyable treats and toys. Also, if possible, you may want to consider leaving your dog at a doggy day care or with friends and/or family when you aren’t there. whatever your strategy, NEVER PUNISH YOUR DOG FOR HIS SEPARATION ANXIETY BEHAVIORS. Instead, provide motivational rewards to get positive results. Understand your dog, adapt training techniques to the unique situation and you will reap the benefits.

1279000809 42 My Dog Pulls

When I first started out as a dog behaviourist helping to train people, and in turn helping them with their dog training, I was asked why is a lead called a lead? well, most people know the answer when you say it like this but how many realise before this? The answer is simple, we should lead our dogs with it not follow or be dragged.

So where does it all go wrong? Why is it so hard to train my dog to walk on a loose lead?

Well, from when your dog is a puppy you will read things about how to train him, things like, to get him used to a lead place it on him and let him walk around the house in turn dragging it behind him.

Two things happen here. The first is, a lead is an alien tool to your dog. What I mean by this, is if I was to place a piece of rope around your neck you would soon start to associate it as a negative thing. Take time to introduce the lead to your dog slowly do not rush it. The dog must choose to place its head through the loop, it must be done with a good association. Only use calm affection whilst making the lead a good thing this way the dog will learn to associate the lead with calmness.

The second mistake the dog has learnt, is to drag the lead behind it. now when you pick the lead up for your first trip outside your new dog thinks it pulls the lead behind it, and since your holding the lead, you must follow.

Dog Training – Biting Behavior Problem

Monday, July 12th, 2010

1278993610 61 Dog Training – Biting Behavior Problem

Bringing home a new puppy is always an exciting time for the entire family. getting that new puppy off the right start with proper training is very important to making that puppy a valued member of his human family. there are a number of talents that every new puppy must master, including going up and down the stairs, and how to accept a new collar as if she’s worn it her entire life.

Preventing biting and mouthing

Biting and mouthing is a common activity for many young puppies and dogs. Puppies naturally bite and mouth each other when playing with siblings, and they extend this behavior to their human companions. while other puppies have thick skin, however, humans do not, so it is important to teach your puppy what is appropriate, and what is not, when it comes to using those sharp teeth.

The first part of training the puppy is to inhibit the biting reflex. Biting might be cute and harmless with a 5 pound puppy, but it is neither cute nor harmless when that dog has grown to adulthood. Therefore, puppies should be taught to control their bit before they reach the age of four months. Puppies normally learn to inhibit their bite from their mothers and their littermates, but since they are taken away from their mothers so young, many never learn this important lesson. it is therefore up to the humans in the puppy’s life to teach this lesson.

One great way to inhibit the biting reflex is to allow the puppy to play and socialize with other puppies and socialized older dogs. Puppies love to tumble, roll and play with each other, and when puppies play they bite each other constantly. this is the best way for puppies to learn to control themselves when they bite. If one puppy becomes too rough when playing, the rest of the group will punish him for that inappropriate behavior. through this type of socialization, the puppy will learn to control his biting reflex.

Proper socialization has other benefits as well, including teaching the dog to not be fearful of other dogs, and to work off their excess energy. Puppies that are allowed to play with other puppies learn important socialization skills generally learn to become better members of their human family. Puppies that get less socialization can be more destructive, more hyperactive and exhibit other problem behaviors.

In addition, lack of socialization in puppies often causes fearful and aggressive behaviors to develop. Dogs often react aggressively to new situations, especially if they are not properly socialized. In order for a dog to become a member of the community as well as the household, it should be socialized to other people, especially children. Dogs make a distinction between their owners and other people, and between children and adults. it is important, therefore, to introduce the puppy to both children and adults.

The best time to socialize a puppy to young children is when it is still very young, generally when it is four months old or younger. One reason for this is that mothers of young children may be understandably reluctant to allow their children to approach large dogs or older puppies. this is especially true with large breed dogs, or with breeds of dogs that have a reputation for aggressive behavior.

Using trust to prevent biting

Teaching your puppy to trust and respect you is a very effective way to prevent biting. Gaining the trust and respect of your dog is the basis for all dog training, and for correcting problem behaviors.

It is important to never hit or slap the puppy, either during training or any other time. Physical punishment is the surest way to erode the trust and respect that must form the basis of an effective training program. Reprimanding a dog will not stop him from biting – it will simply scare and confuse him.

Training a puppy not to bite is a vital part of any puppy training program. Biting behaviors that are not corrected will only get worse, and what seemed like harmless behavior in a puppy can quickly escalate to dangerous, destructive behavior in an adult dog.

Driven By Boredom 3.0 » Archive » A Few Of My Favorite Things: Movies To Blow People’s Minds

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

A Few of my Favorite things is a series that appears most weekends on Driven By Boredom. Each week I talk about three of my favorite things from a specific genre of film, music, or something else all together. Each favorite thing is accompanied by a video and a description of why it is one of my favorite things. Click here for more favorites.

I have a handful of movies that I break out when I really need to impress someone. If I think someone is really amazing, I invite them over and watch some insanely twisted movie with me that I know will blow them away. 9 times out of 10 it is an Asian Extreme film… Battle Royale or maybe something by Takashi Miike or Park Chan Wook. It was hard to narrow films down to just three… I figure too many people know Battle Royale, and not everyone can appreciate a film like Salo or the 45 minute rape scene in I Spit On Your Grave… and speaking of rape scenes, Irreversible is not a film I want to watch over and over again so showing that to people is sort of out. I can usually judge a persons character by how much they appreciate Wayne’s World (unless they are really young… or really old) so that spends a lot of time in my DVD player. but, when I really thought about it, I came up with three films that I show people over and over again, that have never failed to fuck up the minds of the friends and well wishers I invite over. Keep reading to find out the top 3 films that you need to bump to the top of your Netflix queue.

1. Wild zero – 2000If I am pressed for a favorite movie of all time, this is usually the film I give. It is seriously the most mind blowing thing ever. in 2001 my friend Adam found a bootleg VHS tape of Wild zero at a used record store. He had no idea what it was but it had bad engrish on the box and the tag line was “rock and roll JET movie”. I was over one day and he put in the last 30 minutes of it. I was blown away. I immediately ordered a bootleg VHS off the internet and bought one for my brother. A few years later it came out in the US on DVD (complete with drinking game) and I have purchased it for several of my friends as gifts. Anyway… to explain this movie would be impossible, so I will just list some of the amazing things that it features: rock and roll, zombies, space aliens, exploding heads, transvestites, rock and roll, magical whistles, super human drug dealers that shoot lasers out of their eyes, Japan’s legendary Guitar Wolf, exploding guitar picks, and rock and roll. For those who don’t know about Guitar Wolf, they are said to have recorded an album so loud that even on the lowest volume it is still very fucking loud. they are amazing, this movie is amazing, and your face may in fact melt if you see it. So, use caution, but see this movie NOW.

Man Bites Dog – 1992Another strange occurrence led me to witnessing this movie before it had received much attention in the US. A few of my friends went on a school trip to France and they were watching French TV and this documentary about a French serial killer came on. It was in French, so they didn’t really know what was going on, but they knew it was insane. they somehow figured out the name of the film and tracked down a VHS copy with English subtitles. As soon as they got back they showed it to me and I finally tracked down my own copy from this cult video rental place called Video Vault. The film is a fake documentary about a very charming serial killer who befriends the film crew and through out the movie pulls them deeper and deeper into his world. The film is extremely realistic and you can forget that what you are watching is fake. The movie is both hilarious and sinisterly dark. The film feels very Blair Witch and has a very similar ending, making me wonder how much Blair Witch was influenced by the film. also, luckily for you Criterion has released the film in the US making it extremely easy for you to get a copy. It also has possibly the greatest DVD box art I have ever seen. Seriously, see this movie, it is intense to say the least.

3. Trapped in The Closet: Chapters 1-12 – 2005When my brother told me I had to see 12 R Kelly videos I thought he was out of his fucking mind. after I watched two of them I was hooked. This tends to be the exact same reaction that everyone has. When I first got my DVD copy of the first 12 chapters of R Kelly’s opus I brought it over to a house party that my friend Alex invited me to. I didn’t know anyone but him, but he had talked up my taste in movies and told me to bring over something fucked up. Instead of one of the movies above, I pulled out Trapped. When I got there only Alex had any interest in watching it. A few people stayed in the living room as we put it on, but most people gathered around the kitchen drinking and playing cards. About 3 chapters in, every single person in that house was gathered around the TV like it was a car accident. many of those people at that apartment became close friends of mine in the following years. This movie connects people. These films are so funny that maybe even R Kelly is in on the joke… but you wouldn’t know it from his absolutely moronic audio commentary, where instead of you just listening to him talk, you actually have to watch him, watching the movie. Trapped is brilliant on like 4 levels. There are all these allusions to Hitchcock and each chapter ends in such ridiculous fashion. Seriously every bit of the movie is laugh out loud funny, all the way to the credits. Chapters 13-22 were somewhat disappointing, but it was pretty fucking hard to live up to the first 45 minutes of sheer genius that R Kelly brought to the screen. Even the Independent Film Channel is in on the joke as they had a 2 hour special showing all the chapters and released them all for free on their website. So you can watch them online for free right this very second. If you don’t believe me, just watch the first few chapters below and see if you aren’t instantly hooked. I dare you.
