One of the most common early problem areas for pet owners is house training your dog. House training your dog (or potty training) is also one of the easiest behaviors to train. The biggest mistake here is that people forget to look for the obvious signals or events that predict having to “go” such as sniffing, wandering around the house, or that “worried” look, until they step in a wet spot! Bad time to try to “train”.
You are reactive, angry, upset, and have this ridiculous tendency to believe that rubbing a puppy’s nose in the spot then throwing the animal outside is the answer. This is NOT the answer to house training your dog and will not fix the problem. This is a punishment consequence and will only make the puppy afraid to go outside, then hide under the couch and piddle, leaving you lots of little wet spots and wonderful aromas.
Instead of spending your time cleaning wet spots, be smart about house training your dog. There are very predictable times of the day when the urge to go is high.
- In the morning
- After getting a drink of water
- After eating food
- Mid day (especially if you feed your pet in the morning)
- After evening meals
- Before bedtime
Take your pet out after each one of these events. very young puppies may have to go more often due to small bladders and high metabolisms. by taking your pet out often, particularly after the above events, you have ample opportunity to reward your pet for going outside in the designated area. In-between these events keep an eye on your new pet and look for behaviors that might be suggestive of having to go. Better to take the animal outside for a dry run than ignore the signals and clean the carpet.
It is important that when you are house training your dog, that you reward your pet immediately after it eliminates. You may have to wait five or ten minutes at first. Praise your pet, tell it what a good job it did. If it does not go, do not reward it. instead, calmly take it back inside and try again a little later but keep a close watch on your pet. If it shows the signs of having to go, take it outside and try again. Eventually, it will go and you can give your pet praise and rewards afterward. The more often you are able to reward your pet for going potty outside, the faster it will associate the outside will going potty. Accidents in the house will disappear. The time spent early is much better than time spent cleaning, getting angry, or buying new carpet.
If you follow these simple guidelines, you will find that the process of house training your dog is simple and can be done in very little time.
