Head over Heels into Dog Handling: Rumors, Rumors and more Rumors…

1279699218 76 Head over Heels into Dog Handling: Rumors, Rumors and more Rumors...As great as it is to have neighbors as much I hate the rumors that comes with stairwell living.

One of the neighbors spread the rumor that one of my dogs can’t be trusted and that she is aggressive towards strangers. Shortly after we’ve got a complaint with housing (we don’t know if it is because there is this rumor out there or if it is because we have three dogs or because of both of it) and had to get another exception of policy which had to go through my husbands chain of command and we got only granted until August and in August we have to move her out of the house and board her somewhere else. Thankfully I have an outdoor kennel ready that I can keep her in. It’s actually two kennels and I am thinking of moving two dogs out of the house so she wouldn’t be alone out there. I just hate people sometimes. I have an idea of who it could have been and that person is the most backstabbing woman I have ever met in my life. I think she is trying to get to me but in the end she is hurting the dogs more than me.
They haven’t been living in an outdoor kennel for a year. They’ve been staying at my parents every once in a while for a couple of days but it’s not the same than moving them out of the house until we pcs to the States.

Not any of my dogs are aggressive towards strangers and I’ve done everything to prove it. She will protect me if she has to but that’s one of the reasons why I have dogs. I feel safer with them. Military Spouses are alone a lot of times. Duty, Deployment, Training… and I don’t want to be alone all the time and I want to feel safe. my dogs give me the feeling of being safe. they keep me company, give me something to laugh each and every day, I stay active because of them and they alarm me if somebody is at the door or doesn’t belong in this building. they know who belongs in this building and who doesn’t and they will let me know. Zenzy will protect me when we are out at night. We’ve had a couple of encounters where she sensed that something wasn’t right and successfully kept some stranger on the distance but that is what a good dog does.

I’ve been making a point to walk all three of them over the post, I don’t have a problem to take them to the headquarter area. they are leashed, well behaved and if I have to go to the ATM I use the opportunity and take them with me. If I have to go to the bank or mail office I tie them up outside and go inside. I even took them to the change of command ceremony because EVERYBODY was there and I knew that people would pay attention to a woman that has three German Shepherds on the leash. they behaved perfectly. Just sat there and let people pet them. I was so proud of them that I did another round over the post before we went home. the kids in the neighborhood love all three of them. even though there is the leash policy I’ve let Yukon off the leash and the kids were throwing sticks and they played with him. they adore the puppy because they can play chase games with her and they love Zenzy because she’s laying down and lets them walk all over her. She loves kids and simply enjoys the attention she’s getting from them.

Yesterday I went to the river Rhine and some stranger was standing down there. I asked him if he was okay that I have them off the leash and he said he’s fine with it. they have never seen that guy before and that is how aggressive they are towards strangers… take a good look at those man-eating machines, especially Zenzy, isn’t she the worst of all?

The only problem I have with Zenzy is that she is dog reactive. She hasn’t always been like that and we are working on it. We can walk by other dogs without her going at them. but if they are off the leash and run towards us it is a totally different story and I hate when dogs, that are off the leash, run towards us without listening to their owners. It happened so many times that I believe that it is one of the reasons why I am dealing with a dog reactive dog now. She’s had pyometra and almost died from it, the annoying puppy, had a surgery, hormonal change, dogs that ran up to her… these are all factors that come into play and she just didn’t want to be around other dogs anymore but it got a lot better and you can clearly see that my dogs are NOT aggressive towards strangers!

Herding Dog Training

1279360831 16 Herding Dog Training

The benefits to herding dog training are very plentiful. Fencing for your pastures can be very expensive and requires consistent maintenance. Training a dog or a group of dogs for herding takes time and effort but not only is highly useful, it is rewarding as well.

Some dogs have a certain amount of herding dog training bread into them. This makes the training process easier but it still requires time and effort. Research on herding dog breeds will go a long ways. once you have found a good pup you should start to familiarize the dog with the mechanics of sheep farming.

Simply taking the dog with you to the fields is a good start. If an older dog has never been around larger animals they can sometimes be frighted. Dogs which are frighted may lash out and become unruly to train. If you happen to be trying to train an older dog who is afraid at first you will need to do a bit more work to correct this problem.

While having a pack of dogs (two or three) is much more efficient when herding, only train one pup at a time. trying to control, praise, and scold several dogs at once is not only frustrating for you but it will also be confusing for the dogs.

If you already have a dog who is trained for herding this can be very beneficial for a new pup to watch. often times dogs learn from other dogs behavior. If you are training your dog for competitions you may already have friends with trained dogs. it may be possible to have training sessions with these dogs.

Herding dog training can be some what frustrating if you have never done it before. one thing you will want to make sure of is that you always correct your canine when he/she makes mistakes. it may get a bit tiresome after a while correcting the same mistake over and over again but if you do not your dog will develop bad habits. when a herding dog develops bad habits it can be dangerous for the sheep as well as the security of your flock. Avoid this at all costs.

While teaching one command at a time seems less confusing for your puppy it can cause them to become board. Try and alternate two or three commands at a time. once your pup has mastered these commands you can start to work on more complicated commands.

Dogs are working animals. their reward for commands well done should be praise but keep in mind that dogs just wants to work. when a canine is working you will notice that their posture changes. they are alert and focused. you will notice the changes in your dogs behavior right away. once you can tell when they are in working mode it becomes much easier to teach them new commands.

Before I bought these scat mats, I read many reviews that either said the mat was inhumane (and some people refuse to use it) OR the mat was the most incredible invention ever. Below is my review and hopefully it will help someone else decide if it is a good idea to purchase the mat, or not.

First of all, I begin by saying, the mat works. there is no question about it. however how well it works, and where, and to what degree are all the variables that depend on YOU, the user as well as on the subject, your PET, cat or dog.

Tall/Smart DogI had a 40 lb bulldog (a temporary house guest) who was quite tall (even for bulldogs, because I think he is mixed) and the dog was able to jump over a scat mat I placed in a doorway. it was only the second time the bulldog encountered the mat, and he was smart enough to know what to do. he took one leap and was already in the other room (where the Christmas tree, which I was trying to protect, was located). Therefore in the case of taller dogs (especially the ones that know how to jump very well) you may need to set down two mats (one next to another) rather than just one mat, to increase the surface area of the mat – that way the dog will never try to jump it.

Smart but Short Legged and lazy DogMy own bulldog, who is also 40 lbs but short and stumpy and lazy, NEVER tries anything with the mat in the same doorway. (Please not when you place mat in doorway it needs to completely cover the entire entrance – if there is space for the dog to get through without stepping on the mat, he or she will try it). When the mat is in the door way, it doesn’t matter if there is a steak on the other side of the mat, my short legged bulldog will not even bother to try to go on, or near it. so that mat is a GREAT alternative to pet gates, which are usually made very poorly anyways that you end up breaking it. Your home also looks so much better without an ugly pet gate as. The mat is simple, and sweet, and your dog will never touch it and you yourself will just have to step over it so it is great in doorways or right below the stairs, like when/if you don’t want your dog to go upstairs). however make sure you tell guests right when they get in the house about the mat because someone will always step on it and while it won’t hurt them, it might be a little embarrassing – I had a house guest who was so startled by the mat shock, he said a bad word very loud, and I had to contain myself from laughing.

Couch HoggingMy bulldog was also taking over our family room couch (and this guy is pretty spoiled, he has his own personal trainer and when her numerous suggestions didn’t work), so we left mats on the couch and he never goes on the couch anymore. however keep in mind, the couch has to completely covered, because the dog will go on any areas large enough that was left uncovered on the couch . We have a large sectional and we use two large mats on each side. you also have to make sure that if the dog isn’t allowed on the couch, he has another desirable place to rest his head (this is the interest of training, so that one day even without the mats, the dog will no longer go on the couch, and use his own bed).

Smart Small DogsMy neighbor has a small tiny dog (mixed breed) and I sometimes babysit her, and this gave me insight on the use of scat mat on small dogs. it actually works better on them. With bulldogs, they have high threshold for pain, and it takes them a good 3/4 seconds to actually realize the scat mat for what it is. however for small dogs they will approach it, yelp from the surprise of shock and will never ever go near it. With bulldogs, they don’t even make a sound after touching the mat so the high setting is recommended. however for small dogs, low or medium setting is fine. plus you will not need the large size of the mat for small dogs, unless you want to make sure to cover a large surface area.

PuppiesThe only reservations I have about the scat mat is its use on puppies. I just would not do it. it maybe too young for them to experience something alarming or surprising and it may impair their emotional development or trust towards you or your household so buyers if you want to train a puppy, consult a trainer and use treats and positive vs negative methods. DO NOT USE THIS DEVICE ON PUPPIES. I think this mat is more for matured dogs, whose ingrown habits you are trying to break. For instance, my bulldog took over the couch because my boyfriend kept letting him get on it and watch TV with him, and soon the entire couch was his and it got all smelly and gross so I used these mats to sort of wean him away from it, by preventing access, and giving him another comfortable place. Whenever the scat mat is not on the couch (temporarily, like when I have guests, my dog will still try to get on it but it’s only been a few weeks so I think it will make some time. Puppies will always go on couches too for comfort but be strict about the couch issue (either they are allowed or they are not) while the puppy is young and it will solve the problem but it is necessary to use the scat mat for anything regarding training puppies – if you consult a certified trainer you can practically teach a puppy to do anything. When I say puppies, I am referring to a pet under 1 year of age or less. DO NOT USE SCAT MAT ESPECIALLY ON VERY YOUNG WEEK OLD PUPPIES I CANNOT ADVOCATE THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

CatsI looked after my best friend’s cat and he was exposed to the scat mat. he took a few steps, got shocked and never even went downstairs ever again (where the mats are located in the house). however the cat is a rescue and he is very hostile and angry and has little confidence so I am not sure if the scat mat was what caused this extreme/over reaction or if the cat’s personality contributed to it. I don’t know much about cats, but this was the kind of cat that if you touched him, he will actually bite your hand. My dog also stays downstairs in the house so I don’t know if it is because of the scat mats or dog that the cat refuses to venture to the first floor of the house. however I have heard that scat mats are great for kitchen counters when it comes to cats, who gets on them to access food, but I don’t know enough about cats at all to tell you how they will do with scat mats. Whatever the case, you will have to know your cat or dog well enough to know if the scat mat will work or not.

Inhumane or Not?After using and trying the mat out for some time, I also concluded that it is not inhumane (IF USED ON ADULT DOGS AND CATS), and here’s why – people touch the device and say things like “it is too powerful, etc”. but they forget that their animals are actually very highly intelligent. A dog or a car will only ever really feel a scat mat once or twice, and will NEVER go near it again. In my household, the ones that keep getting shocked are actually the humans because we leave it in the door ways, and on the couch and everyone forgets about it and either keep stepping on it, or sitting on it. so this device isn’t an pain inflictor (maybe to yourself) but not to your animals – once they felt it they are over it, they will never go near it again. The pain is also psychology (almost tingly in fact and not physically harmful, I would know about this very well because I’ll come downstairs all sleepy and sometimes forgets and stands on the mat for about a good 5/6 seconds). My friend told me about a lady whose standard Poodles were so tall they were getting food from kitchen counter tops it got so bad the owner had to put mouse traps on the counters – now THAT is what I call inhumane, and sheer desperation. I had to tell my friend to tell the lady about scat mats.

I recently bought two scat mats and I use it in a door way to prevent my dog from messing with the Christmas tree, and another one below a shelf (where my dog was getting DVDs off of and biting them into pieces). I had to switch these two mats around to go on the couch as well so today I am getting another two to use solely for couch so it can stay put there, and my dog learns the entire thing is off limits, all day everyday. however I anticipate many people (humans) including myself accidently experiencing the “shock” value of the mats in my household than my dog (who is obviously smarter than us) ever will.

I hope this review has been helpful to you, and again I would like to reiterate my point not to use the scat mat nor any other “devices” on young puppies – they can easily be trained with treats and repeating good habits and positive or negative reinforcements.Rating: 5 / 5

My cat had me at wits end. he wanted to be on the counters all the time. I’d come home to find cat litter on the counter which is gross. tried using the xmats which have plastic spikes on them (he got used to them and walked all over them). then I decided he would not win the war and got one of these shock pads(the shock is mild depending on how you set it). All it took was one time jumping on this and he got the surprise of a lifetime. he stays clear now. The secret is to put it where the cat likes to jump to then once they learn to avoid that spot move it to the next place they choose to jump up to. I think they remember the spots to avoid (at least my cat did). This product is made of cheap materials but it works and thats what counts. I highly recommend to owners of stubborn cats.Rating: 5 / 5

Both my wife and I have been zapped by it on accident, when we forget it is somewhere and come across it. It’s more of a psychological shock than an electric one, just scares the hades out of you if you’re not expecting it. Im sure the cats feel the same way!Rating: 5 / 5

We have a 140lb Bull Mastiff and we just moved into a brand new rent house and he stays outside and he immediately started clawing at the back glass door whenever he would see us inside. I did not want to have to buy a new back door when we moved out so I did some research and came across this product. The very first day I put it out by the back door, he went to claw on the door and he got the zap the mat produces and he jumped back and has never attempted to go to the back door again. I just turn the unit off and leave it sitting there so I guess he thinks it is still on because he will not get anywhere near it. My husband stepped on it to make sure that it would not really hurt our dog before we put it down and he said that it is not powerful but it does produce enough of a zap to make you want to re-think it. I would highly recommend this product it really worked for us.Rating: 5 / 5

I have two domestic long-hair cats that love sleeping on the couch. one of my cats has a bladder problem, and my last couch lasted only a year and a half because of it! When I bought my new couch, I also bought the large Scat Mat to get some life out of my couch.

I was worried about the intensity of the shock of the Scat Mat, but I kept the mat set to the lowest intensity. My friends touched the mat just to ensure that it wasn’t too intense – it startles the cats but obviously doesn’t hurt them.

I only had to use the mat for a week before my cats had learned to stay away from the couch. In fact, they don’t go near the couch at all. Even though the mat only covers the seat cushions, my cats don’t even jump up on the back cushions or even scratch the arms!Rating: 5 / 5

#1. It’s easier to house train an adult dog compared with a puppy. it will respond better to commands. it will have a fully developed set muscles for bladder control. And it can go much longer before it has to eliminate.

#2. If you have just recently acquired your dog, if possible, try and obtain the dog’s house training and behavior history from the previous owner. This can make a big difference in how to proceed.

#3. If you are going to potty train your dog to eliminate indoors, make sure you choose a suitable potty. There are many dog potty’s on the market that are nothing more than a tray. You really want one with a splash back and a post for the dog to aim at.

Clicker Dog Training

1279036812 91 Clicker Dog Training

Clicker dog training is an excellent way to start training your dog from when they are very young. it is one of the few training methods that can be used with young puppies.

So what is clicker dog training? it is simply a device that creates a consistent, but unique sound that your dog can recognise. the click can be used to mark a certain type of behavior and if the behavior is good, a treat will follow. this allows the dog to recognise when they have done what you want them to and remember the sound and treat in the future. by using the click dog training system, your dog learns quickly and will be much more responsive to you.

The clicker dog training system is better than training a dog using voice commands because the device will generate a consistent sound that will always be the same. whereas your voice can change with your emotions and tone, sending mixed signals to your dog.

Also if you are angry with your dog, this emotion will transmit to your dog in a negative way. the dog will also be able to set apart the sound of the clicker device from the surrounding sounds of the everyday environment. this means you can carry out the training in most places such as parks.

A great advantage of the clicker dog trainer is that it doesn’t involve any kind of punishment or force to work. therefore the entire training process is much more pleasant not only for the dog but for you as the owner to carry out.

Some training methods will rely on using devices such as choke collars or sprays to discipline the dog. the clicker dog training system doesn’t rely on any of these methods. in fact the opposite occurs, the training system can be made fun and enjoyable not only for the dog but for you and your family. this is even more of an advantage if you have children because they can take part in the fun games and even play a part in training the dog themselves which will be great for developing their own confidence and character.

Having your children work closely with your dog when they are still young puppies can also be an excellent thing to do. the clicker system can be used on puppies when they are only a few weeks old with some excellent results.

The clicker system can be combined withe your usual activities from day to day, such as going to the shops or taking your children to school. this also means that your children can play a part without disturbing their own routines.

DIY Dog Training Is Less Costly

1278964809 59 DIY Dog Training Is Less Costly

There has never been a better time to get started with “do it yourself” dog training because there are now excellent online dog training guides like Sit Stay Fetch and Dove Cresswell’s Dog Training available to download online 24/7. This means you can get started with one of these programs within minutes from now.

There are a lot of great things about DIY dog training. the most obvious is probably that it’s less expensive than hiring a local pro dog trainer. Depending on where you live you may also have trouble finding a good dog trainer.

That being said, I believe the most powerful reason to train your dog yourself is so that you can develop a more personal relationship with your dog. If you can take the time to learn how to really communicate with your dog then that will definitely be a really rewarding experience for you both.

When you have your dog trained by a local pro your dog may learn to behave only when the pro trainer is around. If this is the case then it doesn’t really do you much good at all. of course you want your dog to learn to behave for you, not for someone else! This is another substantial reason to train your dog yourself.

With the DIY dog training guides I mentioned above you can begin right away and you can do so without any monetary risk involved because they both include a two month full cash back refund with every purchase. you can try it out and see if it works for you and if you are not pleased with it for any reason at all you can very easily get your cash back.

You may even want to try both of them out to see which one works better for your tastes. and even if you do purchase both of them that will be less expensive than just a few sessions with a professional dog training expert.

If you live near Austin, Texas then you may want to try this Austin Dog Trainer. He has Austin Dog Training Classes available.
