Using Dog Separation Anxiety Training To Help Dogs With Canine Anxiety

1279206011 61 Using Dog Separation Anxiety Training To Help Dogs With Canine Anxiety

Don’t you just hate it when your dog barks non-stop while you’re gone?Separation anxiety in dogs is a common reason why dogs chew up furniture and clothing, and even claw doors and windows when they’re alone.   By using dog separation anxiety training, you can often solve this problem.

you have two goals with this training.  the first is to make your dog less dependent on you, and the second is to teach him that being by himself isn’t a bad thing. Basics of Dog Separation Anxiety Training

It’s important that your dog know his place in the family pecking order.  the dog should be at the bottom of the family heap, not the top.  even if your dog sees you as the pack leader, it’s important that he doesn’t rank himself socially above the other members of the family.  everyone in your home should be involved in dog training so that your dog understands that he needs to obey everyone in the house, not just you.

your dog shouldn’t get too attached to you, as this leads to canine anxiety.  We’ve all seen the 90-pound dogs who always want to curl up in someone’s lap.  It’s funny at first, but it gets old fast.  It’s best to train your dog to sit or stay about three feet from you.He needs to learn that constant contact with you isn’t needed for him to be happy.

Don’t let your dog sleep in the bed with you.  if he’s already doing this, first train him to sleep at the foot of your bed.  Then encourage him to sleep in his own doggie bed, with the eventual goal of moving his bed out of your bedroom.you want him to learn to become more independent of you.

make sure your dog gets lots of exercise to burn up the extra energy he has.  A long walk in the morning and again in the evening goes a long way toward keeping your dog on an even keel emotionally.

this sounds harsh, but don’t make a big scene when you come home.  Encouraging your dog to jump around, barking in excitement when you return, is only reinforcing the idea that he can’t be happy unless you’re there.the best advice is to ignore your dog for twenty minutes or so before you leave, and again when you return. Teaching Dogs With Separation Anxiety To be happy when They’re Alone

Work on teaching your dog the basic “sit,”, “relax,” and “stay” commands.  He needs to know these basic commands so you can work on these steps.

find a reason to leave the room if you’re watching tv.  Use the “sit-stay” command, and then leave.  At first come right back, and reward your dog with a tasty treat if he stayed and didn’t follow you.over a period of days, gradually increase the amount of time that you’re gone.  do this many times a day, so that your dog learns that when you leave, you do come back.  He also learns that if he sits and waits patiently for you, he gets rewarded.

choose a room in your house where your dog can’t destroy anything.  Put your dog in there with a few favorite toys that he only gets when he’s by himself.  Stay with him a little while, and then leave without any fuss, and close the door behind you.  come back before he gets upset, and reward him with a food treat.  Repeat this as often during the day as you can, gradually increasing the amount of time you’re gone. when you’re done with the training session, be sure to put these toys away.

What your dog is learning now is that he gets fun toys when you’re gone, and a treat when you return. He’s learning that being alone isn’t so bad after all.

your next step? To take what you’ve just learned and apply it.  You’ll want to avoid making mistakes as you use dog separation anxiety training to solve your canine anxiety problems.  Just click on any link in this article to learn about a great dog training course that may help to solve your problem.

Defense Against Dogs

1279202416 44 Defense Against Dogs

As a dog trainer and handler many times I get questions from people about how they should defend themselves against a dog attacking them. this is a very interesting question but it has no instant clear solution. But maybe this article can help you and set you on the right track. first of all before we are going to deal with the techniques and tactics let’s take a look at dog handling and training.

There are different types of dogs and different types of handlers/owners. Some combinations between dog and owner work fine and some don’t. those who don’t work out are the ones that give problems. The ones that work fine are those were the owner knows his animal, it’s needs and temperament.

The ones that spoil the fun are those who either:

  • Got themselves a dog to show of.
  • Don’t have a clue about the needs of a dog.
  • Think their dog is a human.
  • Need a dog to boost their ego.
  • Selected the wrong dog for the job.

Next we should take a look at the dogs. There are different races of dogs, each of them bread for a different purpose. a Maltezer will never attack you the same way as a Bloodhound would. Their purpose is different as is their body size. But within the different races I need to say that every dog has it’s own character and temper. Some are easy going, others are nervous, some like to bark and some just bite without a warning.

When buying a dog make sure you know exactly what you want the dog to do for you. do you want him to guard you (defence dog), do you want him to attack trespassers (attack dog) or do you need company (companion dog)?

When reading the papers and listening to the news we always hear about the same dog races to be the bad ones. they are called dangerous, attack dogs, vicious, etc… and the law is trying to ban those dogs or put restrictions on breeding them. To my opinion this is completely wrong. most of the time the dog is paying for the stupidity and ego of his owner.

The dogs listed usually as dangerous are: Rottweiler – German Sheppard – Pit-bull – Doberman – Bulldogs – Alaskan Malamutes – Siberian Huskies – Great Danes – etc…

If you take a look at them it is easy to understand why these dogs are on the blacklist. they are all working dogs of considerable size and weight. But if you look at statistics you will find that people are attacked more frequently by the terriers than by a dog of the blacklist. The only difference is to be found in the damage the attack provokes. a 45kg dog with a bite pressure of 750 kg per square centimetre does a lot more damage than a little doggie reaching 10 cm of height and weighing 3 kg.

Well now, how do we defend against a dog that is going for us? first of all if it’s a trained police dog 100% sure, than stand still and don’t move at all. they are trained to bite when you flee or resist. Lie down on the floor face down or stand still with your hands up. they are trained to recognize these signals. These dogs are the easiest to deal with.

Next type of attacker is the one that is not trained at all. Depending on the type of dog (race) he will go for one target or another.

Wrap your arm in your jacket and offer your arm to the dog. 60% chance he will go for it. When he bites resist a little, that will make him tighten his grip, fall on top of the dog and immobilize him with you forearm (still stuck in his mouth), next stick your thumb in his eye and take it out. Don’t try hitting his nose. he will only get more ferocious. take out both of his eyes before you release him. a 45 kg Rottweiler is very difficult to subdue so don’t hesitate, he will not give you a second chance. (I don’t like this but i write this to protect the innocent victims of the consequences of stupid owners) if it’s a large heavy dog (type Rottweiler) the chances are he will try to get at your legs. they are a little reluctant to get up to grab your arm. if he tries, kick at him and always face the dog. Don’t turn around to run away. that will only excite him more and trigger even more his hunting instincts. Call for help, scream and get people to help you, try to pick up stones or sticks and throw them at the dog.

If you are made of the stuff hero’s are made off you can try something completely different. In the case the dog come running to you and is alone and barking, run towards him and make lot’s of noise while you swing your arms around. this will make you look bigger and you have a 73% chance you scare the dog of. (Only 23% if the dog doesn’t bark).

Barking dogs don’t bite goes the saying and to some level it is true. a dog barks to warn you or to hide his own fear.

Next and most dangerous categories of dogs are the ones who are only partially trained. they don’t respond to commands and don’t recognize obvious signals. they go for the kill so to speak. they have enough self confidence to not be scared away but they are not trained enough to stop when the victim stops resisting. These are the ones that make most victims. they are the hardest to defend against. The only option you have is the same you use against an untrained dog. But be aware that those dogs will be more difficult to subdue or to lure into biting in you arm. Some of them are trained to bite in the shoulder or the genitals so be very careful.

If there are more than one dog attacking you than pray. this is the same as being attacked by a pack of wolves. The hunt in group and wile you defend yourself against one the others will circle and take you in the back. Put your back against a wall or car and get a stick try to hold them off until help arrives.

As you can see it is very difficult to defend against a dog if you don’t know what you are up to and in order to be able to distinguish different types of dogs and attacks you need to be an professional handler or at least an experienced owner/handler.

The best to take care of all these dogs without killing or maiming them is to use pepper spray. The regular spray sold in your local town will do just fine. These sprays are cheap, they come in different sizes and colours and they are easy to carry and put away. they work against every type of dog attack.

Ouch! Dang, get your claws outta me! That hurts, Alice! get off me, Morgan! Ginger, don’t do it! Okay, I love all my cats, too!

I have a collection of rescue animals. Rufus, my golden Retriever, was a beat up hobo when he came to me. Skinny, half starved, wounded and scared, I directed him to my backyard to protect him from traffic. I cleaned him up, fed and watered him and he has been with me now for almost three years. no one claimed him, so I now I am his.

The world-famous Cocker, Cookie, was given to us because she had been abused and couldn’t get along with others.

Morgan, my Tabby Cat, was left on our porch by her feral mother, along with a brother and sister. She adopted me.

Alice and Ginger, my goofy twin kitties, were given to us by some folks that couldn’t care for them. Now, they call me “Daddy.”

I also have four tiny little ones. Being the procrastinator that I am, I waited too long to get Ginger and Alice fixed. about ten weeks ago, there was a break-in at my house. two neighborhood thugs broke into my house through a screen. I woke up in the morning to find two alley cats in my house.

And Alice got pregnant.

Cookie follows me around, always afraid that I will leave her. Ginger likes to lay upside down in the window, soaking up the sun. Morgan likes to lick my nose, for whatever reason. Alice generally sleeps on the pillow next to me, while Rufus hogs half of my bed.

Truthfully, I wouldn’t change a thing. my goofy collection of degenerate rescue animals gives me great pleasure. They love me, unconditionally, and I love them the same way.

Pets are our connection to our better sides. It’s difficult to discuss politics with furry little animals that only care to love and be loved. there is no racial prejudice or partisan hatred in our pets.

Our pets are better people than most people.

Tell us all about your pets – where did they come from and what stories to you have to share?

Puppy Owner’s Guide To Shih Tzu Training

1278932414 45 Puppy Owner’s Guide To Shih Tzu TrainingPuppy Owner’s Guide To Shih Tzu Training

Shih Tzu training is as critical and as possible as training other breed of dogs.  Shih Tzu’s also known as Lion dogs are thought of as one of the oldest breeds of dog.

below are released Shih Tzu training tips to guide dog owners:

In housebreaking, decide what method to use.  Are you going to paper educating him as you are too occupied to take him outside each time he must use the bathroom?  choose which one works best for you and your dog.

then, train yourself.  Put simply, you have to be well informed enough and know the proper way to train your dog the technique you have chosen.

when he accidentally use the lounge as his bathroom, do not attempt to strike him or rub his nose on his own mess.  Physical punishment will not correct him; instead will just make things more difficult.

when it comes to obedience training, train your dog the basic come, sit and stay commands.  These basic commands are his essential components to other more involved obedience training and will help you develop a nice relationship with your dog.

Use positive beefing up.  Positive re-strengthening increases the possibility for a dog to exhibit the same behavior again;  it is composed of loving praise, pats and treats.  Giving of treats is an effective way in dog obedience training.  But just make sure to show and give the treat just when the command is already performed.  Showing of treats before giving the command is like bribing your dog to do it.  Your target is to coach him to follow commands because he loves and respects you as his leader.

Whether you are on housebreaking or obedience training, give him correct diet.  Consult your vet on the types and quantity of food you want to give your pet.  it will also help if you’re conscious of what foods are going to be avoided to reduce the likelihood of allergy and other food-related problems.

These few tips seem to be so simple but will surely bring the best out of your Shih Tzu dog.  And what exactly you may get?  a Shih Tzu dog with human acceptable behavior and is amusing to be around.

1278907210 73 How Can I Improve My Dog’s Health? This Article Has the Answer

This is a question that my friends often ask me. They all want to know why their dog is tired, weak, and unhealthy despite eating properly. They want to know if they could do something to improve their dog’s health naturally. So, I am going to answer a bunch of questions that dog owners often ask me. if you have a dog and if you are wondering how you can improve its health, make sure you read this article.

What is the most important thing I should know about improving my dog’s health?

The most important thing you need to know is that there are three factors that play a major role in your dog’s health – diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements. it is very important that a pet dog is fed a proper diet, exercised every day, and given proper health supplements.

Of course, this assumes that there isn’t an underlying dog health problem such as a heart condition that may result in lethargy, or natural declines in energy such as when a dog has a virus or that is a normal part of the aging process. even boredom can cause a decline in dog energy levels and the appearance of a healthy dog.

How can I improve my dog’s health with diet? Don’t I already feed him every day?

Yes, you do feed him every day. But have you ever wondered what kind of food you feed him? Now some would argue that a home made meal or organic food is the way to go. While organic, additive free foods may be important, I don’t necessarily feel this approach (and expense) is necessary for a healthy dog.

In my mind, as long as a dog food says AAFCO certified on the label, the body that certifies dog food, and if the food comes from a reputable manufacturer, then it should be fine. This includes lower cost dog foods that you might find at Wal Mart etc.

How can I improve my dog’s health with exercise? he looks so small and fragile. Won’t strenuous exercise affect his health?

I am not saying that you should make your dog do military presses and superman squats. Simple exercises like walking, climbing the stairs, ball fetching, and swimming can go a long way in improving your dog’s health naturally. Regular exercise improves blood circulation, reduces stress, strengthens your dog’s limbs, and boosts his metabolic rate. So, it is important that your dog stays physically active.

Do keep your dog’s mind strong, consider a KONG toy, where a treat is hidden inside the dog. This will keep your dog busy and cause the mind to stay active.

Keep your Dog’s Teeth Clean

Like in human health, bacteria can build up on a dog’s teeth. This could not only have an effect on dental health, but allow harmful bacteria to enter the body. Daily brushing combined with professional cleaning at the vet will go a long way to sustaining the health of your pet.

What role do health supplements play in improving my dog’s health?

How do you think animals in the wild stay so healthy and energetic? They eat certain medicinal plants to flush the toxins out of their system and cleanse themselves. Since your dog, or any other pet dog for that matter, does not have access to these herbs, they are not able to cleanse their system as often as they should. This leads to a toxin buildup in their body which affects their health in the long run. to avoid this, you need to give your dog health supplements that contain herbal extracts and natural remedies that can keep your dog healthy.

What are the herbs that can improve my dog’s health?

Huang Qi is an herb that can boost your dog’s immune system and make him healthier naturally. it is used extensively in traditional Chinese medicine. Mistletoe is known to support natural immune responses and normal blood pressure. Echinacea is known for its ability to strengthen the lymphatic system of dogs. Mistletoe is a powerful antioxidant that can strengthen the liver, prevent the damage caused by free radicals, and support a healthy immune system. All these are powerful herbs whose medicinal properties have been well documented with the help of clinical trials.

What else should I know about improving my dog’s health?

Apart from a healthy diet and regular exercise, your dog needs lots of love and care. Spend some time with him every day and take good care of him. Give him a small dose of herbal supplements every day. Avoid exposing him to pesticides, herbicides, weed killers, and other such substances that are harmful to his health. these are some of the simple tips you can follow to keep your dog healthy and happy for a long time.
