1303263336 57 Best brand of dog food for cane corso mastiff?

right now I am feeding my 5 month old 50 pound cane corso mastiff pedigree dog food as well as tuna or salmon, chicken and veggies a couple times a week. I was looking at other brands in the pet store (canada) and their ingredients and all that, what do you think is the best kind of bagged dog food for a cane corso?

When looking for a food you want to stay away from by-products, ground yellow corn, and any artificial flavors or colors. You want to get a premium food (basically a food that you HAVE to go to a pet specialty store to buy). When feeding a premium food, you may pay more per bag, but you will feed less and have less yard clean up (a big plus!) so in the long run it is actually cheaper.

Nutro makes excellent food. they have 3 lines: Max, Natural Choice, and Ultra. with all three lines you will get an all natural, human grade food with added vitamins and minerals; no ground yellow corn, which is a filler and a big allergen among pups; no by-products, which can include heads, feet and intestines; and no artificial flavors or colors. Nutro also has the highest levels of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 & 6) to help promote healthy skin and coat and also reduce shedding. Max is your basic premium food and from what I’ve seen the lowest priced premium food on the market. Natural Choice has taurine added and is made more for specific needs (i.e. sensitive skin, sensitive stomach, etc.). and Ultra is a holistic food with more fruits and vegetables, also known as super foods, which help with your pups immune system, joints, heart, vision, brain, etc.

I recommend getting him off Pedigree. It's quite low quality and does not offer proper nutrition for a growing giant breed. your puppy requires a careful balance of nutrients, particularly calcium and phosphorus, in order for his bones to develop properly.

Here's an unbiased, scientific review of Pedigree:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_…
I don't know which formula you're using, so I just chose the regular puppy formula. as you can see, it's full of flaws.

Here's a great list of mastiff-friendly kibbles:
http://www.mastiffonlinecommunity.net/vi…
My favorites from that list include Fromm Four-Star (which is available in many flavors, but might not be easily available in Canada) and Canidae all Life Stages.

Like someone else mentioned, Innova EVO and other grain-free kibbles are quite good. however, they're not suitable for your puppy, or any other large or giant breed puppy. The companies even state as much on their websites, and on their products. Grain-free foods tend to be too high in calcium and phosphorus for healthy joint development in large and giant breeds.

a good food ive seen is wellness large breed puppy food and then at one yr old wellness large breed adult

natural with no corn, by product or fillers

my dogs love it n never looked better

wellnesspetfood.com for more info and store locater

and if u joijn the mailing club, they send out coupons every month

this brand may seem a lil expensive, but since it doesnt contain fillers dogs tend to need to eat less kibble to feel full and thus having the food lasting longer and actualy saving money

exp- i buy the small breed 12lb bag for 26 dollars ( with coupon) for TWO small dogs n it last me almost 3 months, thats less then ten bucks a month that im spending on food

good luck!

Pedigree is good for young pups but it is very high in calories, so I suggest in a few months to switch over to one in low calories since big breed dogs always eat a lot more such as Iams. =]

Blue Buffalo. My dog LOVES it, and it's one of the best on the market.

for a dog that likes salmon and veggies? Taste of the Wild.

I really like Blue Buffalo and my dogs love it!

Sea Dogs lose top scout to NHL Coyotes

SAINT JOHN – Norm Gosselin's eye for talent helped the Saint John Sea Dogs become one of the top teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

But those scouting skills will be used to evaluate players for the Phoenix Coyotes in 2010-11. the NHL club on Tuesday announced the hiring of Gosselin as an amateur scout in charge of covering junior-aged players in Quebec and the Maritimes. the former firefighter joined the Sea Dogs as head scout in 2005 and became the club's player personnel director in the spring of 2009.

“It's a new challenge,” Gosselin said Tuesday. “I was really surprised to get the call.”

The call came earlier this month from Phoenix general manager Don Maloney. One of the Coyotes' other amateur scouts, Keith Sullivan, worked for Gosselin when he was the GM of the Sherbrooke Castors, who eventually became the Lewiston Maineiacs.

When an opening became available on Phoenix's staff, Sullivan recommended Gosselin to Maloney and director of amateur scouting Keith Gretzky. Gosselin eventually met with Maloney and Gretzky in Kingston, Ont., and was offered a job the next day.

“It's probably like the players,” Gosselin said when asked about NHL aspirations. “You have a dream in your head, but it was never a priority. my priority was the Sea Dogs.”

The same could be said for all of the QMJHL teams Gosselin served. Aside from Sherbrooke and Lewiston, his lengthy career in scouting, management and administration included stops in Val-d'or, Shawinigan and Cape Breton.

He worked as a firefighter until retiring in 2001, giving him extra time to focus on hockey. still, he didn't foresee an NHL opportunity.

“I didn't have any expectations,” Gosselin said. “The Sea Dogs were my focus.”

In his new role, the players Gosselin likes will later be evaluated by Gretzky. Several Sea Dogs – Jonathan Huberdeau, Zack Phillips, Tomas Jurco, Nathan Beaulieu, Gabriel Bourret and Aidan Kelly – are eligible for the 2011 NHL draft in Minnesota. Gosselin said he expects to get his first look at those players when the Sea Dogs play in Montreal on Sept. 24.

“I've started to build a list of future prospects (for next year's draft),” Gosselin said. “One thing is for sure, the Sea Dogs have a couple.”

Gosselin is known for his preparation at the annual QMJHL draft. the Sea Dogs' staff grew accustomed to seeing him thumb through note cards containing information on virtually every player eligible. He'll also be remembered for his leadership skills.

“The two things that stick out are his level of organization and the degree to which he involved his scouting staff in meetings,” Sea Dogs associate coach and hockey operations director Mike Kelly said. “The scouting meetings were run by one person, but not dominated by one person. it was a comfortable environment.

“He's loyal, organized and detail-oriented. Phoenix is very fortunate and I think they know that.”

Apparently, that's indeed true.

“We're lucky to have him,” Gretzky said. “He's exactly what we're looking for. He's done it all in the Quebec league and I think he'll add a lot to our staff.

“You meet him and you see his resumé and he's full of energy. He knows what it's going to take and what players will make good NHL players.”

Kelly said the Sea Dogs will fill the vacancy, but added the club doesn't feel the need to hire a replacement right away. Kelly wants someone who's “respectful of the chemistry we have on our scouting staff.”

“We're not in a panic,” he said. “We'll look at all the applications we receive. we have a terrific group of guys who work extremely hard and we want to do everything in our power to keep that rolling.

“Norm was so instrumental for us. He knew the league and brought a certain skill set to the organization.”

Some General Information about Dog Training that could help you

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:02 PM PDT

Dog training is never an easy task, however, it can very well be much easier, with the proper and most accurate knowledge regarding the best ways to properly train your dog. while surfing the internet you will more than likely run across several different websites that will provide free information to you about how to properly train your dog and how to get the most out of it as well. these websites can be so very helpful and some of them will probably even have more information posted concerning hiring a professional that could properly train your dog if you just do not have the time or the patience to give it a go. Many people have to rely on someone else to have the responsibility to train their pets the appropriate way and that is ok, different things work for all different people. it does make you a horrible pet owner, it makes you simply human. Not all of us are meant to be good at things like this, so paying for a professional is sometimes some of ours only hope for having a good behaved and very well trained dog.

It is good idea for anyone wanting a good dog to make sure that they make all proper preparations for training their dog in the near future. you could visit your local library to check out some books on more information regarding this type of thing, as well as doing all the research you want, right from your home computer system. you will find when doing some of this research that your dog will not listen to you if you do not remain patient and always be consistent when telling them what to do. Communicating with your dog is very important, yes, I know, they can not talk but they do understand your tone that you use each time you speak of a command. This works as long as you are using that same tone each time that you are wanting them to do that specific thing. They can be quite brilliant if they are trained properly and if it is done in the correct way.

Your dog will be so very happy with you once you begin your dog training skills and they start to figure all of your commands out and you will also be one very happy owner. it is very important for you to give plenty of love and affection to your dog throughout all of this so that they can feel how pleased you are with them and they will definitely respond accordingly. Who knows, with the right amount of training and enough time to instill all of the training in them, you could end up having yourself a really cool dog that could even win in big dog shows one day, if you choose to get involved with that type of thing. Remember to stay patient throughout this entire process because it sure can get frustrating at times but in the end you will be totally happy with the results.

Nice Dog Labrador Retriever

Posted: 20 Jul 2010 07:45 AM PDT

The Labrador Retriever is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. The Labrador, once known as the Lesser Newfoundland, is the most popular breed of dog (by registered ownership) in the world, and is by a large margin the most popular breed by registration in the United States (since 1991), and the United Kingdom. it is also the most popular breed of assistance dog in the United States, Australia, and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. They are exceptionally affable, gentle, intelligent, energetic, and good-natured, and Labradors are generally considered good companions for people of all ages (due to a high level of patience and tolerance for children), making them both excellent companions and working dogs. With training, the Labrador is one of the most dependable, obedient, and multitalented breeds in the world.

History

The modern labrador’s ancestors originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The breed emerged over time from the St. John’s Water Dog, also an ancestor of the Newfoundland dog (to which the Labrador is closely related), through ad-hoc breedings by early settlers in the mid to late 16th century. The original forebears of the St. John’s dog have variously been suggested to be crossbreeds of the black St. Hubert’s hound from France, working water dogs from Portugal, old European pointer breeds and dogs belonging to the indigenous peoples of the area. from the St. John’s Dog, two breeds emerged; the larger was used for hauling, and evolved into the large and gentle Newfoundland dog, likely as a result of breeding with mastiffs brought to the island by the generations of Portuguese fishermen who had been fishing offshore since the 1400s. The smaller short-coat retrievers used for retrieval and pulling in nets from the water were the forebears of the Labrador Retriever. The white chest, feet, chin, and muzzle characteristic of the St. John’s Dog often appears in Lab mixes, and will occasionally manifest in Labs as a small white spot on the chest or stray white hairs on the feet or muzzle.

I’ve gone to the dogs

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

1279710008 36 I’ve gone to the dogs

I’ve become a dog lover in my FOF years. I was nipped in my upper thigh by a neighbor’s dog when I was a kid, an incident that instilled the fear of God in me whenever I came within 50 feet of a dog, even if it weighed in at three pounds. I had to go to the ER to have the bite cauterized.

My dog fear dissipated over the years, but I still wasn’t a big dog fan. actually, I thought any woman who adored a dog really needed a good man.

Turns out, I barking up the wrong tree. After hearing David talk about how much he loved the dogs he’s owned, I wanted one. My biological dog clock must have kicked in.

We took Rigby home a little over four years ago, and although everyone I know thinks he is a spoiled brat, needy and a pest, I love him. I can’t even tell you why I love him, especially because I agree he’s a brat. Maybe it’s because he would be lost without me. where would he get his food, his shelter, and his companionship? And who would wag their tail furiously when I came home?

Rigby and I went into a pet store on tonight’s walk, where I always like to look at the puppies for sale.  I wanted to take them all home, especially the ones who looked forlornly up at me.

Finding the Dog Bed For Your Beloved Pet

1279288813 89 Finding the Dog Bed For Your Beloved Pet

When you own a dog, you need to ensure that they have all possible comforts and that their needs are met. Having a nice and comfortable place to rest and sleep is absolutely needed, especially if your dog cherishes his resting time a lot. a dog bed comes in several different shapes and sizes, but before choosing one you should do a little research.

Shopping dog bed can be rather easy due to the vast variety of options, but you need to make sure that you know some things first; you cannot buy a dog bed if you haven’t observed and noticed the sleeping habits of your pet. Just think that humans do not sleep the same way either and need different sizes and types of beds. The same rule applies to dogs.

One of the first things you need to do is to measure your dog, so as to know which the right size for your bed is. if you take your dog for medical checkups often, your vet can definitely do that for you. You should know the length and width of your dog, so as to choose the right dog bed.

Once you have the measurements, you should check how the dog prefers sleeping. some dogs tend to curl up while others tend to stretch along the bed. This will give you a rough idea on the shape you should opt for; there are round, rectangular and square beds, although the shape depends on the size and type as well.

The dog’s sleeping habits will also reveal the ideal type of bed. if your dog likes sleeping on your bed or couch, then it means that he prefers soft and warm places. most dogs prefer soft cushioned spots, but there some dogs that like sleeping on the floor or carpet, especially in places that are not covered by anything – this applies to big dogs with heavy fur.

A soft and spacious bed is always a great idea; most dogs would be absolutely enthusiastic about a lounging bed. most dogs prefer higher sides as well; they make them feel more protected and safe.

Once you decide on the basic elements, you need to consider a few more things. first of all you need to define whether the bed will be used outside the house or if it will travel with you, in case of trips. some dog beds are quite easy to move and fold for portability. if your dog is not travelling, you can buy a sturdier bed, such as a sofa bed. if you will move the bed outside, in the garden or balcony, you need to make sure that it is water proof and warm enough. Your dog doesn’t like being wet, especially in winter.
